Exploring Minimalism

It’s easy to associate photography with portraits of people and sprawling landscapes, but have you ever considered chopping out extraneous details to tell a simple, yet powerful story? Minimalist photography seeks to capture subjects in extreme focus, eliminating the background noise of more conventional photography techniques. Perform these minimalist exercises with your digital camera and learn the true meaning of “less is more”.

Simple Doesn’t Mean Bland

First, mentally remove the frame and look at your subject in its entire context. Now, start cropping out details until you can’t remove anything anymore. You’ll find that the resulting image will be bolder. Don’t forget to utilize negative space to help tell that story—sometimes, the fact that you left something out is just as compelling.

The Details, Elevated

In a minimalist context, the smaller details become the star of the show. Typically subtle elements like contrast, geometry, and texture come into startling relief—and this isn’t a bad thing! Experiment with this new perspective, and you’ll discover insights that will also enhance the way you handle more traditional compositions. You will need to wander into some unusual territory with the settings of your digital camera, but rest assured that it will be a robust and intriguing experience.
